Detroit Institute of Bagels asked me to design a line of merch for their Core City location in Detroit. Their name and colorways are a play on the Detroit Institute of Arts museum located a few miles away.
They are a classic Jewish New York style deli with their cuisine, but their restaurant interior and food packaging has a modern feel with midcentury furniture and geometric shapes on packaging. They were interested in having me capture both these themes in the some of the designs.
I used some vintage fonts, imagery and layouts for the classic deli feel, and then transplanted some shapes from their menus and sandwich paper packaging for the modern feel.
Playing on their DIA connection I took some imagery from famous artworks at the museum and superimposed bagels on, or in them. I thought that would be funny. The DIB folks loved the idea.
